Choosing a degree course that allows you to achieve a First Class Degree
November 26th, 2006 by get a first class degree
This is the most important decision you will make during the course of your university degree, and you haven’t even started yet!
The advice given here focuses on personal attributes, as opposed to cost of university courses, cost of living and reputation of institution which are also vitally important considerations.
Before looking at degree courses, spend a couple of hours properly considering and listing your strengths and weaknesses.
Perhaps get friends or family to add their comments too. Self perceptions are rarely as close to reality as we would like!
During this process you should consider:
- Areas of academic aptitude versus ineptitude
- General likes and dislikes
- Interests and hobbies
- Things that capture your imagination versus things you find boring
- Types of assessment: exams versus coursework
What you should end up with at the end of the process is thoroughly considered list of things to look for, and avoid in a degree.
This list can be used to help you select from the list of available courses. It will also help you prepare questions when you attend open days / interviews.
You may think I am stating the obvious here, and I am, but the obvious is often overlooked.
If you properly consider your strengths and weaknesses and use this analysis to correctly select a course that:
- Inspires you
- You enjoy
- Plays to your strengths
You will find it much easier to invest the thousands of hours in that it takes to get a first class university degree, you will be motivated to work hard, and will ultimately get better marks.

Hi, Thanks for your valuable information. Could you please advise me or provide a list of genuine universities that could offer me a master degree online.
Regards,
Karun.
Hi Karun,
That depends on which country you want to study in.
I have added a couple of posts on this subject if you have a look at those…
In the UK the Open University specialise in distance learning, and have done for decades….
There are also existing “bricks and mortar” Universities offering distance learning, these would be ok also.
The ones to avoid are online only Universities which are not accredited / recognised, there are a lot of these around, you really need to do a lot of research and be sure of what you are doing.
I have found one or two websites that “broker” courses from many different Universities, some of which look ok, but could not recommend then as I do not know anyone who has used one…
