I got a first class degree many years ago, and in fact achieved firsts in all nine units of my degree. I'd agree with the points you've listed above, but perhaps would add a couple more: 1) Use apostrophes correctly (misuse detracts from the overall impression of competence) 2) After your exhaustive review of the literature, set aside time to think. For every essay I would spend several hours in isolation, lying on the floor or sitting in a very comfy seat, just thinking. This was always the most difficult part of the process. At the end of it, I would usually come up with an original angle or theme for the assignment, as well as a number of specific criticisms about existing theories and evidence. PS: You need to take a line broadly in agreement with that of the person marking the essay - lecturers are only human, and will see opposing views as wrong or mistaken.
